Composer Martin Bresnick’s Caprichos Enfaticos will anchor this thematic rumination of humankind’s most persistent troubles. The composition sprawls across eight movements, utilizing Francisco Goya’s historic collection of etchings—Los Desastres de Guerra (The Disasters of War)—as its source material. In spite of such a weighty reference, Caprichos Enfanticos also has delicate passages amidst thunderingly stark blasts of military-style drums, as the program’s title suggests. A lively 6/8 time signature is sprinkled throughout, which was at one time the beat of a festive chain dance popuar in Europe.

Pivoting from the darkness that is Caprichos Enfaticos, James Wood’s Village Burial With Fire takes a more spiritually-minded approach, instead focusing on the afterlife rather than earthly despair. The blend of Eastern and Western music styles explores rhythms that trace their origins to Sri Lanka.

Soundings Director Seth Knopp will join the Percussion Collective on piano this evening, an ensemble founded by decorated percussionist Robert Van Sice, who guided the lineup at Yale University. The group is opening the 2018/2019 season with its first tour of China. Although different, previous attendees of the aforementioned Paddle to the Sea performance would do well to return for this percussion-forward event.
